Antigen testing tests for current COVID-19 viral particles or pieces.
Antibody testing tests for the presence of antibodies. We typically test for IgM (acute antibodies) and IgG (memory antibodies). The presence of antibodies indicate that one was likely exposed to the virus and has developed an immune response.
A positive test demonstrates that viral particles are present and this may indicate a current infection. Sometimes we hear of "false positives", this is very rare and usually is indicative that the positive results represent inactive virus and thus non-infectious. A positive result means you must quarantine, follow CDC recommendations and follow up with your Primary Care Provider.
A negative test can be the result from poor sampling, low viral load, or no virus present. If one has a negative test result and you have high suspicion of possible infection including symptoms of COVID, high potential of exposure, or known exposure then one should quarantine per CDC recommendations and consider confirmatory testing with PCR.
Antigen tests, which search the sample for viral proteins instead of the virus’s genetic code. These are not as accurate as PCR testing and typically used as a screening tool with results available within hours. This the COVID Rapid Antigen Test being performed at our facility.
PCR test, which is short for polymerase chain reaction, is a molecular test, meaning it searches for the virus’s genetic material in a nasal swab or saliva sample, and it is often processed in a highly complex laboratory. This the Gold Standard and typically takes one-to-five days to get results.
